Bernard Foley Dies suddenly of Heart Attack

Prominent Lawyer Stricken at Home; Funeral Saturday

Stricken suddenly early Thursday morning with a heart attack, Bernard B. Foley, 46, prominent local attorney, died an hour later at Cuilver Hospital.  Death occurred shortly before 5 a.m.  

Mr. Foley apparently had been in his usual health Wednesday night and had attended a New Year's Eve party at the home of friends.  Death was due to a coronary occlusion.  Since entering the practice of law with his father nearly a quarter of a century ago, Mr. Foley had been active in many civic and community affairs. During the war, he was chairman of the County rationing board and was one of the two board chairmen in the state to serve throughout the life of the rationing machiner.

He was a member of the board of directors and also attorney for the Elston Bank & Trust Company.  He was also active in the affairs of the Hoosier Crown Corp.

Mr. Foley was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church here.  He had served as secretary of the Montgomery County Historical Society for several years and also served for a number of years as a member of the Crawfordsville Park Board.  He also was a member of the Wabash Valley Notre Dame Club.

Mr. Foley belonged to both the County and State Bar Associations.  He was a member of the Elks Lodge, the Knights of Columbus and Crawfordsville Country Club.

Born Sept 21, 1901 at Wingate he was the son of Andrew N. and Mamie Crane Foley.  He was married June 30, 1927, to Helen Payne at South Bend.  

After attending grade school at Wingate, Mr. Foley was graduated from the high school at Rocky Ford, Colorado.,  He received his bachelor of arts degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1925 and his law degree from the South Bend school in 1927.,  Immediately after graduation, he joined his father in the legal profession here.  

The survivors include the widow, Mrs.  Helen Foley; the father, two daughters, Mrs. Mary Patricia Cooper and Miss Ann Therese Foley; a grandson, Robert Bernard Cooper and a number of uncles and aunts.

Rosary services will be given at the home, 616 East Main Street Friday night at 8 o'clock.  Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 9 o'clock at St. Bernard's Church with Rev. JC Keating in charge.  Burial will be in Calvary cemetery. Friends may pay their respects at the home.
